Opt-Out

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Period:

Fall: 06/13/2025 - 08/01/2025

All registered medical students are automatically enrolled in Sam Houston State University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) unless proof of comparable coverage is submitted to the University.

Waiver Requirements:

1. Plan must be fully compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA):

• • Provide the Essential Minimum Benefits required by the ACA with no annual limits.

2. Needle-stick coverage (occupational or hazard-related injuries and sharp-related injuries) and other preventative care services.
3. Insurance plan must provide coverage for medically necessary care in the Houston area equivalent to the SHSU Student Health Insurance Plan.
