Opt-Out

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

All registered medical students are automatically enrolled in Sam Houston State University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) unless proof of comparable coverage is submitted to the University.

Waiver Requirements:

  1. Plan must be fully compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA):
    • Provide the Essential Minimum Benefits required by the ACA with no annual limits.
  1. Needle-stick coverage (occupational or hazard-related injuries and sharp-related injuries) and other preventative care services.
  2. Insurance plan must provide coverage for medically necessary care in the Houston area equivalent to the SHSU Student Health Insurance Plan.

Early Enrollment Activation
